A choir from South East Cornwall is to be one of the stars of this year's Festival Interceltique which takes place in Lorient, Brittany next week. The festival begins today (Friday) and will run until August 10 and Cornwall will have an exhibition there to promote the county as a tourist destination as well as showcasing Cornish produce and culture. The award-winning Canoryon Lowen choir from St Neot will be taking part along with five-piece Cornish folk/rock band Tredanek, and Truro-based Cornish dance group Hevva, staging concerts, workshops and presentations throughout the week as well as representing Cornwall in the Grand Parade. The groups will also be performing at the Cornish stand. Canoryon Lowen is a mixed choir of 30 singers, based in St Neot, but with members drawn from both Devon and Cornwall. Formed in 2002 under the musical directorship of Nick Hart, the choir performs music from a very wide repertoire, including classical, church music, rock ballads, spirituals and musicals. Celtic regions from across the globe attend the festival, with the Cornish being joined by Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Galicia, Asturias, the Acadie region of North East Canada as well as bands and dancers from across Brittany. It is an opportunity to celebrate Celtic heritage, languages and culture in a bonanza of music and dance, food and drink, and more than 600,000 people visit the festival each year.
