A CHOIR with a long history of raising the roof has come together in their living rooms and kitchens to raise cash for the NHS.

The Polperro Fishermen’s Choir has recorded their version of the folk song ’Men of Cornwall’ with help from filmmaker and friend of the choir Kirsten Hintner.

The film with its rousing lyrics and melody is already proving a hit with all those who might be missing the sounds of the Polperro Fishermen’s Choir and their break out shanty group, The Wreckers. In the normal course of things, the choir would be giving concerts on the harbourside in Looe or Polperro as well as indoor appearances all over the district.

Vice chairman David Lashbrooke explains the significance of the song chosen for the video:

’The song Men of Cornwall was written by Harry Glasson, a Cornish legend himself.

’Harry has written many, many songs performed by choirs and others throughout Cornwall.  He was born in 1951 in West Cornwall, and joined the Merchant Navy the day after his 16th birthday.  He started writing poems when a seaman and then started putting the words to music.

’Harry performed around Cornwall for more than 30 years and has fans all over the world, but tragically for a singer, he suffered from cancer in his throat with the result that his vocal chords were removed ten years or so ago.’

The choir is asking all those who listen to their special remote recording to donate to their appeal for the NHS.
