A singer thought to be the longest-serving choir member in Cornwall – and perhaps even the country – will be honoured by his friends and colleagues this evening.

Murray Collings went to the Polperro Fishermen’s Choir as a 14-year-old boy in 1952. His voice has rung out sure and steady from the bass section almost every week since.

‘I’ve always had a lot of pleasure from the choir – it has always been part of my life,’ said Murray, 79.

This evening (7.30pm), the choir give a concert at one of their most regular venues, the Looe Lifeboat Station.

Here, Murray will be presented with a gift in honour of his ‘record-breaking 65 years’, says chairman, David Lashbrooke.

‘The Cornwall Federation of Male Voice Choirs, who will be represented at the event, believes Murray to be the longest-serving choir member in Cornwall, and possibly the country.’

Ken Puckey and John Pooley will be celebrating 45 years in the choir.
