A NUMBER of bands will be giving their time to perform free in Liskeard tonight as friends and family of a youngster diagnosed with cancer invite people to ‘Tackle it with Charlie’. Keen rugby player Charlie McKay, 15, is receiving treatment at Bristol Children’s Hospital, after a diagnosis of aggressive liver cancer at the end of 2015. Now friends and fellow players at Liskeard Junior Rugby Club are coming together to support Charlie and his family. The ‘Tackle it with Charlie’ event at the Eliot House Hotel looks set to be a sell-out, said organisers Clare Collins, Karen Lawrence and Rachel Rowe. ‘Due to the aggressive nature of the tumour, Charlie needed to start immediate treatment which means a long period of care in hospital,’ they said. ‘As friends of the family, we wanted to do something to help them through this difficult time. Charlie is a keen member of the junior rugby club and loves music – so Tackle it with Charlie evolved.’ Appearing live at the event will be Young Oliver Young, Tez Ray and the Suits and Sam Collins. Charlie, who is due to undergo more chemotherapy this weekend, is doing as ‘well as can be expected under the circumstances,’ said his family. Friends have been visiting him regularly and these visits are the highlight of his week. ’We want to say a huge thank you from Charlie for the support from all his friends. They have made a superb effort,’ said mum Dawn. ‘The hospital staff have been amazingly supportive, as have the community of Liskeard and the surrounding area, from school and rugby mates to relative strangers wishing him well. ‘We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have organised, committed their time for free or donated raffle prizes, and to everyone supporting this and future events.’
