"As we enter the new Millennium, there are many challenges - and opportunities - ahead for our community in south-east Cornwall."

Caradon is committed to playing a full role in all matters that affect the 80,000 or so of us who live in the District.

Not just in striving to provide the best value we can in day to day council services. But also in playing an active part with many other agencies in tackling a whole range of issues - issues such as community safety and health - to get the best possible arrangements for local people.

It is vital we continue our contribution to the continued development of a vibrant and sustainable local economy. So one of the greatest challenges we face will be to make sure best use is made of the new European Objective 1 funding available to Cornwall. Under the current arrangements, our track record is the best in Cornwall for European funding for business premises and the number of manufacturing jobs created. So we will be looking to continue that good work under Objective 1.

We shall continue to listen and learn about what local people consider are the important things that their Council should be doing, and to reflect that in our work. Yes, we shall look for new opportunities for contact, including the internet. But we will not forget those in our community who do not have the chance (or, in some cases, the desire!) to use such means.

Our clear aim will be to ensure that the bond of trust between the people of south east Cornwall and their council is the cornerstone of what we do for the whole of the community we serve.

A happy and prosperous New Year to you all.

Godfrey Smale

Chairman, Caradon District Council.
