A COUPLE who enjoy singing and are members of two Saltash choirs sang on their golden wedding day in a rendering of Stainer's 'Crucifixion' at Saltash Wesley Church. Peter and Barbara Gorvin had a surprise when the mayor of Saltash, Sue Hooper, called on them in the morning, while several friends also visited them during the day at home. Peter is a member of Burraton Male Voice Choir and Barabara is a member of Saltash Ladies' Choir. Peter was born in Plymouth and attended St Peter's Church School, Wyndham Square, and sang in St Peter's Church choir. On leaving school at the age of 14, he went into the dockyard as an electrical apprentice. Later, he joined the army as part of his national service in the Royal Engineers and became a skiing instructor and was part of the 1948 ski team at St Moritz in 1948. On leaving the army he continued as an electrician working at Plymouth Guildhall for many years until he retired at the age of 59. He was chairman of Saltash Fourth Forum for four years. Barbara was born at Torpoint but moved to Plymouth soon after with her parents and attended Honiknowle School, then Devonport High School. On leaving school, she went to work for Jacob's the Printers on the Barbican as a clerical officer. She worked there for 24 years, and later worked for Plymouth Area Health Authority at Plymouth Civic Centre. Mr and Mrs Gorvin have lived in Saltash for 17 years and are members of Saltash Wesley Church. The couple met at a dance in Plymouth Lecture Hall and were married at Higher St Budeaux Parish Church on March 23. They have one daughter, Jane Katyar and two grandchildren Genevieve, aged eight and Luc, aged two. Peter is now 76 and Barabara 72, and after their golden day they left to spend a few days with their daughter and family in London.
