Della Sandercock celebrated her 100th birthday with five generations of her family when they visited her on Tuesday at The Elms nursing home in Saltash. Also visiting Mrs Sandercock were the Mayor and Mayoress of Saltash, David and Helen Carter with their twin sons. They presented her with a bouquet of flowers, and were welcomed to The Elms by deputy matron Mrs Liz Bray. Della, who was one of a twin, was born near Bodmin and later moved to Warleggan and attended school at Mount. Later the family moved to Bugle and then St Austell. After leaving school she became a nanny and domestic help. Her twin sister died at the age of 29 and Della took on her family and, with her own children, she was caring for eight youngsters, four boys and four girls. Della's husband Ewart, died in 1985, and one of her sons died in 1944. Della and her husband were keen on sport and supported Plymouth Argyle. One of her daughters said her mother worked until she was 85 doing domestic work for a local family. Della has been at The Elms for just over three years and her family praised The Elms' staff for looking after Della so well. One of her great grandaughters, Jade Johns, aged six, showed Della the birthday card from the Queen. A birthday cake had been made and a buffet tea for the celebration.
