THE first phase of Callington's new closed circuit television (CCTV) system is now in operation, with the second phase due to be completed soon. The new cameras overlook Church Street and Fore Street, and have been installed to help keep an eye on some of the problem areas within the town. Lynda Small, the town clerk, was delighted with the new system. She said: 'The quality is superb. I can read the number plates of cars at the traffic lights and study the bottom of Church Street, even at night.' The cameras, which have been funded by Caradon District Council, are in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are monitored for more than 50 hours per week. It is hoped the new cameras will act as a detterent and help to reduce the crime levels and anti-social behaviour that is affecting the town.
