LISKEARD cattle market could be relocated as part of aims outlined in a new plan for Liskeard during the next 25 years. The Community Strategic Plan for Liskeard has been released following hard work by volunteers, members of the town council and Liskeard Town Forum. One of the main aims of the plan is to regenerate the town centre to attract visitors and consumers back. Liskeard Cattle Market has been earmarked in the report for possible development. The report says: 'A study carried out by Smiths Gore for Caradon District Council in 2000 stated that Liskeard Cattle Market continues to have a future, although it is essentially short to medium term. 'It seems, therefore, that a better use of this site, providing both better value for the public purse and better facilities for the town, would be to consider its redevelopment sooner rather than later.' Kivells' auctioneers, who run the cattle market on the Caradon Council-owned site, were unavailable for comment The plan also highlights the estimated 5,000 growth in population that Liskeard will see up until 2030. The plan says: 'A sympathetic, timely and well- planned programme of regeneration must be put in place otherwise the predicted population growth will swamp the town's infrastructure and destroy its character.' Regeneration plans could also include a new supermarket and hotel for the town.
