Staff at Tencreek Holiday Park near Looe were yesterday trying to contact the owners of caravans destroyed in what may have been an arson attack on a storage area at the site. Fire crews from Looe, Polruan, Lostwithiel and Liskeard were called to the holiday complex after a member of staff spotted flames coming from one of the caravans just before 9pm on Wednesday night. A fire brigade spokesman said later that the firefighters managed to extinguish fires in 11 caravans. The spokesman added that arson was suspected and that the police had been called in to investigate. Site owner Mark Joce said yesterday it was too early to comment on possible causes and that he would wait for the police and fire brigade to complete their investigations. The caravans involved were all in storage and are owned by people from across the country. Mr Joce said that in the cold light of day it was impossible to tell how many vans had, in fact, been destroyed as they had all burned down to the chassis. 'We will have to check against the list to see how many are left intact before we can put a definite figure on it, but if the fire brigade say they saw 11 fires they are probably right,' he said. The fire was discovered by a member of staff who noticed a flame in one of the touring vans and ran back to reception to call the fire brigade. 'By the time he had done that the vans were a mass of flame,' said Mr Joce, who added that staff were under instructions not to fight caravan fires themselves as they usually involved gas cylinders and could be dangerous.
