The long abandoned former Caradon Council depot on Marine Drive Torpoint has come up for consideration of a practical use of the site for the benefit of the local community. Over the past years various ideas have been put forward with no conclusions and today the site is an expensive maintenance liability.

At present the property consists of a large central yard area surrounded by two rows of deserted buildings running along the outer edges and is adjacent to a boat storage site.

Over time unauthorised access and vandalism has degraded the property and Caradon and Torpoint town council are anxious that steps to improve the site are taken.

The property has been dealt with by the Housing and Property Committee which had considered selling the site with planning permission for housing for £100,000. The proceeds could then be invested in an employment generating scheme .

At its last meeting the committee came to the conclusion that all the options must be investigated and the Town Council's members present were united in calling for a deferral of any disposal pending the outcome of a development study by a joint working party that would look into a scheme for a combined works-hops/office/storage and training facility for the town.

The proposal would see the town undertaking a two year lease from Caradon at a minimal rent and accept maintenance responsibility and that the resultant investment plan would be eligible for Option One funding. Demolition costs could be borne by the Land Reclamation Scheme. The matter will be discussed at future meetings.
