Caradon Hockey Club certainly have reason to celebrate as they head into the New Year.

As a fledgling club, they are proving consistent contenders in local leagues at all levels, with an enviable atmosphere and social scene.

Numbers are booming, with many returning hockey players dusting off their sticks.

Men's captain Toby Riddle said: 'After the success of gaining promotion by winning the South Western District League in 2008, we knew it would be a tough season.

'However, we have shown great team spirit and discipline to hold a mid-table position. More consistent performances in 2009 will hopefully lead to further success.'

A strong committee of volunteers has worked hard to ensure that the club operates seamlessly from paperwork to pitch.

Club president Jan Woodman revealed: 'The junior section is developing with the support of our volunteers and represent the future of the club.

'Well done to our ladies' third team, who have battled on with determination and secured their first great win of the season a couple of weeks ago.'

First-team ladies' captain Sharon Jeffery admitted: 'We are having a great campaign so far, despite suffering more than our share of absences due to injury and illness.

'However, we have a great team spirit thanks, in no small part, to all the players who have stepped up into the first team at short notice.' Since the start of the season, Caradon has hosted four successful social events, raising more than £500.00.
