SHOPPERS had a lucky escape when a 58-year-old woman lost control of her car in the centre of Liskeard this morning.

The driver had stopped outside some shops in Baytree Hill and was sitting in her automatic car when the car shot forward, hit a wall and went across the road into the steps above the Poundland store in Pondbridge Hill.

The incident happened around at around 9.30am and police said they received the first alert at 9.37am. The woman was not believed to have received any injuries but was taken to Derriford Hospital for a check up after suffering from shock. Luckily no-one else was injured.

The road was still closed at 11am, between Pondbridge Hill and Baytree Hill, for the car to be recovered.
