A crowdfunding appeal has been launched to help raise £50,000 to buy an adapted van and all-terrain wheelchair for a former soldier whose family is from Looe.

Former tank driver Will Bennett, 26, had severe lower limb amputations after the tragic climbing accident in the Avon Gorge when a freak rock-fall severed both his safety ropes and he fell 50 metres to the ground.

Will suffered critical injuries including lower limb amputations, the loss of his spleen and six fractures in his spine, permanently paralysing him from the waist down.

He spent four months in hospital before being transferred to the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury, for treatment and rehabilitation.

Family friend Racheal Reynolds-Smith, from Looe, who lives near Will’s parents, said: “Will remains positive and full of life, and has shown incredible strength during each stage of his recovery.

“At the age of 26, Will’s future has been made so much more difficult; but he continues to inspire all those he meets with his determination and optimism for an independent future.

“He intends to make the most of what he has; a second chance at life.

“That’s why we have set up the page.

“It’s wonderful we have received so much support but we really would love to hit the £50,000 target.”

Will said; “I hope to return to Bristol soon, after I have finished my rehabilitation in Salisbury, in order to remain close to my girlfriend, sister and friends. Ultimately, I am determined to participate in the Paralympic Games and represent England.”
