THE Cornwall councillor for West Looe and Lansallos has called on Cornwall Council to initiate a study to fully assess the stability of Hannafore Lane and Hannafore Road, following the recent landslides.
Cllr Edwina Hannaford is also asking the council to produce a contingency plan that will ensure access can be maintained to Hannafore by emergency vehicles, especially in the event of a serious future landslip.
'I have already asked the economic intelligence section to assess the economic value of this area of Looe,' said cllr Hannaford.
'With some of Looe's main tourism assets in this area it is imperative we have the evidence to make the case for additional funding to deal with the issues that the landslip highlighted.
'The social impact of Hannafore being effectively cut off from the rest of Looe is immense and residents want reassurance,' cllr Hannaford continued.
Looe town councillor Brian Galipeau said that he will be asking the town council to engage directly with Cornwall Council to produce an action plan – and his motion will be received by the council's environment and public protection committee at a meeting next week.
'MP Sheryll Murray visited the landslip on the day it happened and has taken up the case as a matter of urgency. We all have to keep up the pressure,' said cllr Galipeau.
While the recent landslip has brought calls from some quarters for an alternative road to Hannafore to be considered, cllr Hannaford stressed that it was very early days.
'We need to look at all the options, but at this very early stage the first priority is to assess the risk from the existing road – and what is needed to be done to ensure it doesn't happen again.'
