A campaign to impose a 50mph speed limit on a road with one of Cornwall’s worst accident rates has received strong support.

The A374, the ’Torpoint Twisties’ from the A38 at Trerulefoot to Torpoint, is a derestricted route, unlike the A38 with its 50mph limit between Trerulefoot and Carkeel.

Torpoint resident Mike Watkiss, 82, has revived a campaign to get something done about the road. It follows the death of his friend and Torpoint resident Jenny Lowden. Jenny, 72, was walking her dog along the A374 in Antony Road when she was involved in a collision.

Mike, who says he has launched the campaign in Jenny’s memory, and in the hope of saving lives, has the support of South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray, and all five parish councils – St Germans, St John, Sheviock and Antony/ Wilcove – which border the route.

He has also received a letter of support from householders at the road’s edge at Maryfield, near Antony, who have been writing letters to Cornwall Council since 2002 asking for a speed restriction.

Alison Geary, of the Lynher Boatyard at Polbathic, has also given her support to the campaign.
