County Division One Penzance v Callington CALLINGTON'S inconsistent season continued in the far west with a 36-run defeat. However, they were surprised to be greeted by a purple square, following recent spraying for leatherbacks. Penzance were asked to bat first and Jim Shorten enjoyed early success, taking out the first three batsmen for only 19 runs. However, Kiwi Karl Turner and Alex Westren added 47 for the fourth wicket, and then Turner was joined by Tony Riggall and they added another 63. Bravely Riggall was run out by Andy Hocking for 27 and Turner was caught behind off Chris Bennett for 62, which included nine fours and two sixes. Bennett took out three of the middle order, but the Penzance tail wagged bravely and they managed to take the score on to 183 for nine at tea. Jim Shorten finished with a fine five for 28 and Bennett three for 38. Callington were winning the game at a canter, and if Andy Shorten had stayed a little longer, the points would have been in the bag. He made 46 from only 43 balls and, after 19 overs, the visitors were sailing along at 81 for two. But, 10 overs later, they had only added another 10 runs and lost two more wickets. For some reason, none of the middle order could hit the ball off the square, and apart from a little flurry from Ian Hunn and Bennett, the Callington reply fizzled out to a hugely disappointing 147 all out. Penzance juggled their bowlers around, with Riggall and Treve Laity claiming four wickets apiece.
