County Division One
Callington v Luckett
(Monday)
THE Callington bandwagon kept rolling, but not before they were given a scare by their near neighbours from the other side of Kit Hill.
After being put in by visiting skipper Andy Brenton, Callington, already without Dan Davis who was playing in Somerset, could ill afford to lose three wickets in the first 11 overs, with only 26 on the board.
Jon Parsons and Peter Tancock took the score up to 53 when Tancock was adjudged lbw to Mark Southcott for 15. Parsons snicked one to wicketkeeper Adrian Berry after scoring 24, and at 69 for five Luckett were well on top.
Simon Beare made a hugely valuable 30 in the middle order, supported well by Jim Shorten, but just as they seemed to be getting the hang of the spinners, Brenton reverted to the pace of John
Schuttkacker.
Beare went leg before and Paul Clements picked up the wickets of Boundy and Shorten. Joe White made an important 10, but it was Schuttkacker who mopped up the tail to claim four for three and leave Callington all out for 124.
Callington knew they had bowled several teams out for under 100 this season, but that is an easier task if you have already scored 250 in your innings.
If Callington were going to win this one they had to get off to a flyer, and that is exactly what happened. With Chris Bennett and Jim Shorten steaming in, Luckett found runs hard to come by, but it was the explosive introduction of Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Sanjaya Rajapakse, who took three wickets in his first two overs, that left the visitors reeling.
In between those two overs, Clements had skied one to Tancock off Bennett, and after 12 overs Luckett were left on 18 for four. Schuttkacker survived a dropped catch to put bat to ball and smack 32, but he had to watch as wickets fell at the other end, including Brenton, who was bowled by Shorten.
By now Callington, and Rajapakse in particular, were in the mood, and the wickets continued to fall, thanks to aggressive bowling, and another stumping by White. By 6.40pm it was all over and Luckett were dismissed for 62, with Rajapakse taking five for 27 and Shorten four for 15.
