Callington vandalism

I have lived in the centre of this town all my life, and I see and hear things that are going on around me. That's why I am deeply concerned about the vandalism that goes on in this town.

As a Councillor I get many telephone calls concerning this problem. One such call was from a gentleman who has experienced such a problem and says the vandals are driving him out of Callington, where he has lived for 28 years.

He has had his car window smashed and experienced rowdyism at three and four o'clock in the morning, and I ask myself why people should be subjected to this behaviour.

There has been a window smashed recently in our town; a hairdresser's outside pipe stuffed with paper and set alight (it could have caused untold consequences); a mattress set alight, and I had to call the fire brigade at one o'clock in the morning.

I have asked that a letter is sent to the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall expressing the council's concerns, but all I got was a negative response. I expected nothing less than some support.

Unless something is done, someone is going to take the law into their own hands and then someone will get hurt.

This problem is not acceptable and all I am doing is to highlight something that is going on around us.
