Lenten cross

DURING Lent, Callington Methodist Church has had a Lenten Cross on display made from the branches of the large fir tree which was in the church at Christmas. Each Sunday morning a section of the church has placed items on or around the cross relating to Lent - a baby's shawl was brought by members of the Guild, bread and wine by communion stewards, hammer and nails by property stewards, a whip by the junior church and crown of thorns and purple robe by the Bible Study Group and the church stewards. On Palm Sunday the Junior Church teachers gave the readings while the children brought palm branches and distributed palm crosses to the congregation.

At the Easter Sunday service at 11am, the congregation is invited to place spring flowers on the cross to signify new life.

Office closed

CARADON'S Callington office which offers advice to the community on housing and housing and council tax benefits closed on Wednesday of this week. The Council said the closure was due to a low attendance of people seeking advice.

Diamond celebration

for St Dominic couple

ST Dominic couple Terry and Joyce Rogers have just celebrated their diamond wedding.

Terry and Joyce met while they were both attending Sunday school at St Dominic methodist church where they were married and still members. Both went to the local school and the grammar school.

During the Second World War Terry served for six years with the RAF, while Joyce worked as a land girl, milking cows and driving an old Fordson tractor.

When Terry was demobbed they went to live at Watergate Bay before returning to live at St Dominic. They later returned to the north coast. this time to Newquay to manage a horticultural packing factory, before returning to the village to join Terry's brother Vivian in the family business of horticultural merchants.

Terry served as a magistrate for 21 years and as a parish councillor for 35 years. He is still a member of the District Council and Police Authority and was a past chairman of St Dominic Football Club, which he still supports. Joyce has always been a very keen gardener with a special interest in camellias.

The couple have two daughters and five grandchildren who joined them for a family party.
