House appeal

A REFUSAL by Caradon council, to allow an outline application for a detached house on a site at Calstock, has led to an appeal.

The appeal, by Mr D M Oades, is to be dealt with by the written representation method. The site in question is at Glenview, Station Road.

Methodist Guild

CALLINGTON Methodist Guild held a Christian Service Evening recently, Barry Higgins was the chair.

Rev Martin Smith of Saltash was the speaker. He spoke of the years he spent at a Special Needs Teaching School in the years before he came to Saltash as a Minister. Pianist for the evening was Anne Curnow. Tea and biscuits were served by Pam Pengelly and Gwen Olver.

The Rev Anne Curnow presided over the devotional meeting of the Guild. In the absence of the speaker, owing to illness, Rev Anne Curnow was the speaker. She took as her theme, baskets of the Bible. Pianist was Barry Higgins and tea and biscuits were served by Gwen James and Louise James.

United Sisterhood

AT THE recent Callington United Sisterhood meeting, Mrs Audrey Horsham presided. The speakers, Mr and Mrs Somerville of Hampton Court spoke on Christ within me and Christ will lead me. Happy thoughts were read by Carrie Duance of a granny, Mrs Duke of friends, Vida Pearce on shopping and Audrey Horsham - My Garden. The pianist was Elsie Trevorrow. Tea and biscuits were served by Grace Candish and Joyce Bartlett.

Brotherhood

CANON Terry Fuller was the guest speaker at Callington Brotherhood's meeting on Sunday.

Taking as his text, words from St Matthew's gospel, 'Do not worry about tomorrow', Jesus said, 'My Grace is sufficient for all your needs.'

The bible reading was given by Kevin Veal. Musical items were presented by local soloist David Jones. Accompanied on the piano by Barry Higgins, two of David's solos were, 'How deep the Father's love for me.' and 'Breathe on me breath of God', which was his Mother's favourite hymn. The service was led by Russell Deacon.

Day of the Guide

THURSDAY, February 21 is the International Day of the Guide. To celebrate this event, local Blue Badge Tourist Guide, Chrissie Le Marchant, is leading a free guided walk around Kit Hill. This will be a chance to find out more about this unique local landmark and haven for wildlife.

Blue Badge Guides are recognised around the country for their knowledge and expertise. To qualify they have to undertake a long course of training and research. The walk will start at 2.30pm and take approximately one hour. It will be followed by the chance to chat and enjoy refreshments in the Kit Hill cafe. Anyone wishing to participate should wear suitable clothing and footwear. The meeting point is the Summit car park.

St Mary's craft fair

ST Mary's Church in Callington is fund-raising for an extension to the building and is planning its first craft fair.

The fair is scheduled to run from Honey Fair Day on October 2 to Saturday October 5. Anyone wanting to exhibit their crafts at St Mary's should contact Barbara Clayton on 01579 384705 for further details.

Lions' Spring Walk

THE LIONS Club of Callington are organising a sponsored walk within the Tamar Valley to enable non profit making groups to raise funds.

Members of clubs, groups, organisations or PTAs are invited to participate in the Spring Walk which is due to be held on Saturday, March 23 at 10.30am from Harrowbarrow Village Hall.

The walk will provide the opportunity for organisations to raise money for their own individual funds. Alternatively individuals are able to walk for the Lions. Any funds raised on behalf of the Lions will be donated to Lions charities.

The routes will be one, five or ten miles and incorporate Cotehele, Calstock and Metherell.
