Health forum

welcomed

A good turnout was enjoyed for the recent information evening at Callington Community College. Planned as an informal evening where parents and interested people could come along and find out about health matters relating to young people, the evening covered both drugs-related matters and sexual health.

The audience showed a keen interest in the format of the evening and it was agreed that further such opportunities to exchange information would be welcomed in the future.

"Fish Boy"

a sell-out

The recent production of Kneehigh Theatre's "The Fish Boy" was so popular that tickets had sold out before the day of the performance. Such is the renown of this internationally known local company that the telephone hardly stopped ringing.

Recounting the story of a Spanish family with a small son who has a fatal attraction for the sea, the cast of just three used many props and physical theatre to create the atmosphere of the village and life under the sea. Vibrant music and a most effective use of light to cast images and shadows in the auditorium left the audience breathless. It is hoped that the college will become a frequent host for further theatrical performances.

Music within the

community

It was music, music, music last week as students from Callington Community College took their musical expertise into the wider community. During the course of the week they were delighted to be asked to play at Cotehele House, at Harrowbarrow Village Hall and at Callington Town Hall, as well as putting on daily lunch-time concerts at St Mary's Church in conjunction with Callington Primary School and supplying the musical accompaniment for the College's evening carol concert.

The busy programme for the students is not even seeing a let-up during the Christmas holidays. On Friday 21st December were appearing at Lezant Church to play for the evening 9 Lessons service and on Friday 4th January the annual reunion concert will be held at the Millennium Centre in Pensilva which features students, past and present, who have been members of the concert windband.

U14 girls football

The U14 girls' football team were amongst the top 16 teams in the country in the Technology and Sports College's' National Cup Competition.

The team eventually went out to last year's finalists, St Edmunds Sports College from Salisbury in Wiltshire, losing 4-2 in a well-contested game.

St Edmunds fielded a quality team, but it was Callington that opened the scoring through Kate Bourn and at half-time it was 1-1 with everything still to play for.

Helen Kingscott played an excellent captain's game and controlled a lot of what went on in midfield, but St Edmunds stepped up their game in the second half and scored three times before Helen pulled one back in the closing minutes.

The majority of the U14 team will remain together for next year and, with the experience they have gained this time around, they should be good contenders for the final next year.

Wagon wheels U12

girls 5-a-side football

The U12 girls' 5-a-side football team have won their way through to being East Cornwall Champions, just as last year's U12s did. They will now go on to play in the South West Area finals at Andover in February 2002.

In the local competition high-scoring Callington beat Brannel School and Looe Community College 5-0 and 4-0 respectively, while Brannel beat Looe 4-1.

The Callington squad of seven students will ravel to Andover with confidence. Amy Kellaway captained the side and scored four goals, with Charlotte Parker netting two and Gemma Hall, Georgina Reed and Kate Bourn scoring one apiece. Jo Gale and Lindsey Rodwell were the remaining members of the squad.

Design exhibition

An impressive exhibition of work by Y10 Design Technology students at Callington Community College has been enjoyed by visitors during the last week. As the culmination of their first term's work, which is part of their GCSE coursework, the students have used CAD-CAM to great effect. Head of Department Myles Singleton said: "I am delighted with the progress that all of the students have made over the last term. They should all be very pleased with their work." The exhibition, held in the Community Room at the college, is open until the end of term.
