Three more students

will be going to NASA

CALLINGTON community college will once again be taking to the skies next year, with three more of its students visiting NASA.

Alice Parsons, James Williams and Steve Scott from the college's year 12 will be travelling out to America next March for one week in Florida and one week at Texas.

Through science teacher Mike Grocott, the students will be following in the footsteps of last year's group.

To raise funds for the trip, the three students have been busy raising funds through discos, a raffle and car washing to get their way across the Atlantic.

They have also been sponsored by the local branch of the Federation of Small Businesses.

Alice said: 'To get into the programme, we had to write a letter of application to the teacher and say why we wanted to go. I am really looking forward to going over there and actually meeting people who have travelled into space.'

James added: 'Hopefully this trip will give me some of experience of what working at NASA is like. I would love to work there - especially with something to do with astrophysics.'

Mike Grocott said: 'This trip gives people the opportunity to see some of the world. Two schools in Devon are also sending students, but we are the only school in the county to be involved with the trip.'

As part of the trip's selection process, the students will venture onto the moors to do a weekend of problem solving.

On their return, the three will go into the community to give a series of talks to schools, clubs and organisations about their adventures with the space agency.

Mike added: 'The talks give the chance for the students to put something back into the community.'

If anyone can help the students, contact Mike at Callington community college on (01579) 383292.

Memorial award

Hard work, enthusiasm, vision and an outstanding strength of leadership, tempered by a keen sense of humour and an underlying modest trait, have been justifiably rewarded in the presentation of the prestigious Princess Diana Memorial Award to one of Callington Community College's students.

Steve Scott, now in Year 12, has worked untiringly for a range of college activities, his main focus having been managing the College Support Team.

Leading by example, Steve has given up many hours for the benefit of the college and has maintained his endeavours since entering the Sixth Form.

The award was presented at the College's annual presentation evening on Tuesday.

Seasonal last

run for ferry

THE Calstock ferry, which has been running a limited winter weekend timetable for the first time this year, is to have its last run of the season this weekend - before laying up for the winter.

To give the weekend a seasonal flavour there will be mulled wine and mince pies for all those taking passage on the ferry.

The ferry will run between Calstock Quay, Ferry Farm Bere Alston and Cotehele Quay during l0.30am to l.30pm on Saturday December 22 and l0.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday December 23 - with the usual proviso weather condition permitting. The ferry company say it is advisable to call them on 01822 833331 before setting out, where a recorded message will inform customers if the ferry is running.

Office manager for the Calstock Ferry and Motor Launch Company, Hazel Farrant, said: 'May we take this opportunity of thanking all our passengers for their support during this past season, and we shall look forward to seeing you all again next year.'
