Volunteer chef

on Christmas day

CALLINGTON Chef, Tony Soper, has volunteered his services to cook a traditional Christmas lunch for up to 40 people who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day.

Thanks to the generosity of local people, the cost of the meal will only be £2.50 per person.

Tony has enlisted the help of Peter and Jenny Coombe and friends to serve the meal which will be held at the Mustard Seed Church Hall and to provide some after lunch entertainment.

The lunch is open to anyone who wishes to attend. For further information or to book a ticket, contact Peter or Jenny on 01579 382197.

The Group's spokesperson Ms Stephanie Law said: 'We are thrilled to have received this award. For a group like ours this is a large sum of money and it will allow us to help many local parents and their pre-school children. Success for

Methodist Caves

CALLINGTON Methodist Church's first Christmas Caves was a great success. Father Christmas did a roaring trade, having to replenish stocks more than once. The bargains on the stalls were soon snapped up, and the ladies were kept busy with the refreshments.

The winner of the doll, whose name turned out to be Zara, was Lena Richards and the Christmas cake, which weighed 7lb,6oz was won by Sarah Adams.

£1,300 was raised for Asthma Research and Church Funds.

The organiser, Tony Rickard, said that it exceeded all expectations and hopes that next time will be even better.

A united

Advent Service

Members of the four churches in Callington gathered at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Victories for a United Advent Service on Sunday 2 December.

Fr. Sunny Paul welcomed everyone and lighted the first candle of Advent, then led everyone in the first prayer. Briony Woods, with Helen Dart lighting a candle on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, read the first Lesson. Sue Nettle with the Rev.

Anne Curnow lighting a candle on behalf of the Methodist Church read the second Lesson.

Representing the Mustard Seed was Julie Hutchings, who read the third Lesson accompanied by Barry Cumbers, carrying the candle, which was lighted by Pastor Bruce Brown. Christobel Grenfell, led by Vanessa Whitting carrying a candle that was lighted by the Revd Canon Robert Oakes, read the final lesson and represented St. Mary's Church.

The four candles were placed on the altar for the remainder of the service. The Address was given by Mgr Robert Draper, who spoke about the light given out by a candle, which to Christians is a sign of Christ present amongst us and that as Christians we are called upon to spread the light of Jesus Christ. Tommy White, from the Roman Catholic Church, led the prayers.

During the final part of the service the Rev Anne Curnow, Pastor Bruce Brown and the Revd Canon Robert Oakes lighted candles from those on the altar and thence to candles held by all those present after which Fr. Sunny Paul pronounced the final Blessing. After the service everyone enjoyed tea, cakes and mince pies in the adjoining hall.

This warm reception was very much appreciated on a cold and wet afternoon.
