Bassoonist Kate Humphries from Callington joined 60 other budding musicians from around the UK recently when she was chosen to participate in the inaugural Yamaha-Classic FM Music School.
Throughout the weekend, teachers from the Purcell School were on hand to offer advice and guidance during a series of workshops and rehearsals. But the highlight of the weekend came on Sunday, when the children were the guests of conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the London Symphony Orchestra as they prepared for that evening's performance of Tchaikovsky?s Romeo and Juliet. The following day, Classic FM presenter Henry Kelly and members of the LSO came to hear the orchestra's inaugural concert. Classic FM presenter and Director of Communications, Susannah Simons said: 'It was a truly memorable weekend for everyone involved and we were incredibly impressed at the wealth of talent that was on show over the
weekend.'
The organisers hope that the youngsters will be truly inspired to continue with their music making and help encourage other people in their schools to take up playing. The weekend was a unique experience combining tutorials with the opportunity to see and hear just how a top-flight orchestra works and prepares for performance.
