Skateboard
celebrations
MEMBERS of St Anns Chapel Skate Project are celebrating this week after receiving a grant of £5,000 from the National Lottery's Awards For All programme.
The group of 15 young people have been planning a ramp at the recreation ground since early this year and have worked hard to raise the money to build the facility, with the support of Jenny Coleman of Calstock Development Trust.
'We are thrilled to receive this grant, it is the culmination of a lot of hard work and means we can finally get down to building the ramp. We will continue to raise funds for the facility, as there are two stages! But for the time being the hard work starts and we are hoping to find a local, experienced workshop who will help the lads to build the ramp to a very high standard so that has a long life, and the group have some new skills,' said Jenny.
The project has received the support of Calstock Parish Council who manage the recreation ground.
The group meets regularly and would like to hear from young people interested in the project, and parents who are willing to help with it. Contact Jenny Coleman at Calstock Development Trust on 01822 834303.
Plan for second visit
to space centres
PLANS are afoot for the next group of space cadets from Callington Community College to visit the NASA space centres in Cape Canaveral and Houston. Following the first highly successful trip earlier this year, the project is gaining pace as new students are selected.
Co-ordinating teacher Mike Grocott is working on the project
Students are raising funds to help finance their trip.
If any local business would like, for example, their premises painted or any other suitable work undertaken, students are prepared to turn their hands to a wide variety of activities to gain sponsorship.
If anyone in the locality feels they can offer any support to this project they should contact Mike Grocott at the college on 01579 383292.
Rugby success
THE rugby season has started with a great deal of success within all year groups at Callington Community College. The Year Sevens performed well at their first tag tournament and the Year Eights beat Bude in the first round of the Cornwall Cup. TheyYear Nines remain unbeaten with victories over Saltash and Tavistock. The Year Tens are to play their first games next week.
Senior rugby at the college has also been a great success with the first XV remaining unbeaten, claiming strong wins against Cornwall College and Tavistock School. They will go on to play a full fixture list and hopefully tour in the new year.
Special thanks have gone to Luke Livermore (Y8), Matt Cosgrove (Y9) and Dave Vince (Y10) for captaining and organising their respective sides. Further congratulations have gone to Tristan Moon, Dan Boreham, Dave Vince, Alex Moy and Matt Tamblyn who have all represented East Cornwall this year.
Orchard day
THE Tamar Valley Orchard Volunteers Group has organised an Orchard Day to be held at The Old School at Stoke Climsland, near Callington, on October 13.
The day will be packed with interest, activities and fun, giving visitors the chance to find out more about the many varieties of apple in the area; to learn about the management and wildlife of orchards - and best of all - to taste some of the projects!
The day runs from 10am until 4.30pm. For further information contact Sheila Camplin on 01822 833804.
