Eleanor wins

Shades prize

A PUPIL from Callington CP School is a winner in the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's Groovy Shades art competition.

The work of Eleanor Chiswell was judged to be the school's best entry in which every child was invited to use their creativity and humour in painting or drawing a special pair of sunglasses.

The competition was organised as part of the Association's campaign, Shades for a Day, when everyone in the country was invited to wear sunglasses to raise awareness of eyecare in the sun.

The winner from each school which entered the Groovy Shades competition receives a certificate, a cuddly toy puppy and complimentary of the Guide Dogs' Pups magazine.

BASOONIST Kate Humphries from Callington in Cornwall has been chosen from hundreds of musicians to attend the inaugural Yamaha—Classic FM School of Music along with 60 other budding young maestros from around the country.

The companies were inundated with applications for the three—day workshop. Classic FM presenter and Director of Communications Susannah Simons said: 'We were absolutely overwhelmed with applications for the School of Music and the organisers had a really tough task choosing just 60 children.

'Hopefully this will be the first of many successful and rewarding music weekends staged by Classic FM and Yamaha.'

The Yamaha—Classic FM School of Music, which is free to all participants takes place at the Purcell School on the weekend of October 19.

The organisers hope that the youngsters will be truly inspired to continue with their music making and help encourage other people in their schools to take up playing. The weekend promises to be a unique experience combing tutorials with the opportunity to see and hear just how a top-flight orchestra works and prepares for performance.
