Ordination at St Mary's

ST MARY'S Church, Callington was the setting for the ordination to Priesthood of the Rev Penny Raynham by the Bishop of Truro, the Right Revd Bill Ind.

Among those gathered to witness Penny's Ordination were the Portreeve, Jane Black and deputy Portreeve, Tony Nettle, the Diocesan registrar, the Archdeacon of Bodmin, visiting Clergy, Prebends, Canons and Readers, the Priests and

Ministers of Callington Methodist and Roman Catholic Churches and the Mustard Seed Church, the Priests of St Mary's as well as Penny's own family and the families of St Mary's Church and St Sampson's Church, South Hill.

Diana Hambly, Peter Whitting and Penny Raynham gave the readings and the sermon was given by the Revd Dr. David Hewlett, Principal of the South West Ministerial Course; the organist was Philip Morse. At the conclusion of the service Bishop Bill gave Penny a Bible and a Chalice as 'signs of authority given her to preach the gospel of Christ, to minister his holy sacraments and to care for his holy people.'

A faith supper held in the Town Hall, followed the Ordination and the Communion Service and the Revd. Robert Oakes invited the Bishop to say Grace. Bishop Bill said an ancient Celtic Grace - 'Ready, Steady, Go!'

During the supper Bishop Bill presented Penny with her licence and gifts and flowers were given to Penny from St Sampson's Church family, St Mary's Church family and St Mary PPC. The supper ended with Penny cutting a cake that had been made and decorated by Peter Whitting, one of St Mary's churchwardens.
