Fund Raising for cats

CALLINGTON Cats Protection will be having stalls at both The Callington Rotary Club Street Fayre in Callington Fore Street on Saturday July 14th, from 9am - 12 noon and afterwards at The Lions Club Gala Day at Saltash Road park, Callington on Saturday July 14, 2-6pm. CP new goods will be on sale, ideal for small gifts and toys for your cat. In aid of Callington and District Cats Protection, Registered Charity 203644.

A band of helpers are required to help on the stalls, please.

Rotary handover

AT the Callington Rotary Club handover meeting held at The Bulls Head last week, Rotarian Colin Lake was inducted as president for the coming year in succession to Pastor Bruce Brown.

Mr Lake, a marine engineer for some 35 years, and presently serving at Devonport, outlined the current Rotary plans and chose the Marie Curie Cancer Care as his charity for his year in office.

President Lake then presented local businessman and precision engineer, Graham Massey, with his badge of office as Senior Vice President, and due to take office as President on the 2001/02 Rotary Year.

Raising funds

for the blind

TO help raise money for the Royal National Institution for the Blind Callington Primary School has organised a fund raising event: 'Shades for a Day', to be held on July 18.

Students at the school will be allowed to wear their sunglasses for the day if they put a small contribution to the charity. Mr Bond, with his dog, Cider, will be coming to the school to give a talk about blindness during the day.

Gala Day on Saturday

Don't forget, this Saturday the Lions and Rotary Clubs of Callington in association with Pirate FM 102 will be running the annual Gala Day in the town.

Funds raised will go to the Childrens Hospice South West and other local charities.

The event begins at 10am with the annual street fair organised by the Rotary Club, and Fore Street will be closed to traffic to accommodate an assortment of colourful stalls, music and entertainment.

At 1pm the action moves to the Recreation Park for a fun filled family show which includes such events as a fancy dress parade, family dog show, childrens' competitions and a town and fun run.

There will be an all day barbecue, cream teas and a licenced bar. Rowlands Fun Fair will be at the day with all the usual stalls and rides. From 6pm until midnight there will be a variety of live music provided by three local bands.

Mining heritage

ON Sunday July 15th, there is an opportunity to find out more about one of the Tamar Valley's great mines. Archaeologist, Colin Buck from Cornwall Archaeology Unit will lead a walk around Okel Tor Mine near Calstock, giving an in-depth talk about the history of the site. Colin will also explain the work undertaken recently to conserve the remaining features of the mine.

The walk around this archaeological treasure and wildlife haven will run from 10:00am until 2:30pm.

There is no charge, but booking is essential.
