Brotherhood
SOCIETY president Don Mutton was chairman for Callington Brothe-rhood's Sunday Fellowship meeting.
The guest speaker was Albert Thorne (St Giles) and a bible reading was given by Kevin Veal.
Andrew Williams, a local man, was the soloist, accompanied by Jill Rickard. Andy sang some favourite hymns that were requested by members. Two of them being 'Breath on me breath on God' and 'Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.'
The following Sunday members welcomed as their speaker, Peter Parsons from Tresmeer, who took as his text a verse from St John's gospel, chapter three.
The guest soloist was Melville Hoodless from Plymouth who was accompanied by organist Barry Higgins.

'Amizade' sings at
monthly meeting
THE Good Companions Club of Callington held their monthly meeting at Callington Town Hall last week.
The meeting opened with a short prayer by the chairman followed by the business of the day. The chairman then introduced the singing grou 'Amizade' which consist of two sets of sisters, Jo and Laura Browning and Gemma and Stephanie Lumley, all from Callington Community College who gave members an afternoon of entertainment with singing and piano accompaniment by Mick Wearne.
Refreshments were then served while the raffle was called.
Funds for FLEET
THE Stewards of Callington Methodist Church held a fund raising and charity event at which £233.21 was raised. A total of £100 has been donated to FLEET and the remainder to the church funds.
Mr David Reid, a paramedic with the Westcountry Ambulance, who is also a volunteer with the charity attended the event.
Katie Waterman and Anna Pascoe were in charge of the Guess the name of the Teddy and the Number of Sweets in the Jar, both of which were won by Mr D Pridham.
Callington RNLI
collection success
THE Committee of the Callington and District branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution would like to thank all who contributed during their Flag Day collection in the Callington and Gunnislake area. The total collected two weeks ago amounted to £431.14 which was almost a 10 per cent increase on last year's figure.

ELSIE Trevorrow chaired the meeting of the Callington United Sisterhood.
Happy Thoughts were read by Vida Pearce on Early Closing and Elsie Trevorrow on The Gift of Friendship.
The speaker, Phyllis Roberts spoke on 'Spreading the Word'.
Pianist was Rena Wooldridge and tea and biscuits were served by Margaret Wilkins and Carrie Duance.
Planting
wildflowers
PUPILS from St Dominic primary school will be helping create a new wildflower orchard at Cotehele next month.
Amongst the fruit trees in the Centenary Orchard, which hosts several Tamar varieties of apple such as 'Cornish Mother' and 'Pig's Snout', the children will plant several species of wildflower, including red campion, oxide daisies, hypericum and primroses.
The aim of the project is to encourage wildlife into the orchard and surrounding estate, in addition to providing a spectacular display of colour for visitors.
The orchard was created in l995 to celebrate the centenary of the National Trust. A total of 35 trees illustrating nine varieties of Tamar apple were planted on land previously used for market gardening. All the trees were donated by individuals.
Students in
poetry anthology
STUDENTS ranging from Callington School's Year 7 through to Year 13 are featured in a new publication which presents an anthology of stories and poetry written by students in linking schools in Tanzania and England.
Initiated by The Friends of Urambo and Mwanhala (FUM), an organisation that provides links between schools in the UK and Tanzania, the books contains all the winning and highly commended entries in a competition arranged by FUM last year.
Callington Community College students, Luke Ashcroft, Gavin Swift and Beth Carter feature work which were written while they were still at Callington Primary School and Sixth former Lisa-Jane Winfindale, was delighted to be awarded first prize for her poem 'Grandmother' and to have three of her illustrations included.
Calstock Gala
CALSTOCK Gala Day is being organised by Calstock Village Hall as part of the festival of regeneration of the Tamar Valley but is successful could become an annual event.
There will be the usual mix of stalls, refreshments, raffles, games and amusements, and the day will also include a farmers market, which again, could become a regular event in Calstock.
A completely new event will be taking place - Calstock River Race - a fun event with a prize on £50 for the winning team. Teams will consist of three people, one of whom must be a 'maiden' (of either sex!). The object is to rescue the 'maiden' from the Devon bank. There will also be a prize for the 'fairest maiden'. Canoes and safety equipment are being provided by Delaware Outdoor Education Centre who are also taking care of safety on the day. Entries are welcome from anyone and the fee is £5 per team.
Between 4 pm and 5pm there will be a singalong with the Calstock Singers and then between 5pm and 6pm the children of Calstock will perform 'A song of the Barge Shamrock', a play especially written about the regeneration, in front of the Village Hall.
