Family history talk
at Gunnislake WI
THE June meeting of Gunnislake WI saw Maureen Selley, an expert in tracing family history, give a talk.
She explained that a death in the family is sometimes the catalyst to start tracing a family history and a good start can be made by using whatever documents there are to hand. These are often birth, marriage and death certificates although they are not always entirely accurate. Not only official documents are useful. Old newspaper reports can open up new lines of enquiry, especially funeral reports as there is often an entire list of mourners. Army and Naval reports can also provide clues.
Maureen was thanked for her talk and several members expressed interest in starting their own family history.
The competition for a family photograph was won by Annette Latham, second was Caroline Sutton and third was Eileen Robinson.
Tennis open day
at the college
A BRAND new tennis dome officially opens in Callington on July 5. To celebrate, there will be a tennis open day from 9am until 10pm.
The dome which contains two state of the art floodlit tennis courts, will be open to the public free of charge that day. The outdoor tennis courts will be available too, with tennis clinics for all abilities and guest appearances from County players. A gifted pupil from each primary school in the area has been chosen for coaching at the event. The official launch is at 3.15pm.
The tennis dome is part of a new drive to promote sport in South East Cornwall. As part of the Sports College initiative and with funding from sources including the Lawn Tennis Association and Sport England, a Tennis Development Officer has come to the area and is based at Callington School and Community College. Carlos Caldeira, who is a fully licensed tennis coach, LTA qualified to the highest level, has begun a wide reaching coaching programme at secondary schools in the area and their feeder primary schools. He also offers programmes of evening coaching for adults of all abilities, children aged three to six and junior coaching at all levels. There is also a new tennis club based at Callington for both adults and juniors playing both socially and competitively.
Carlos Caldeira, who has moved to Cornwall from Newcastle, said: 'The aim is to develop tennis in the area so that eventually we'll have a performance structure where there are players of county standard and above, but I also want players of all abilities to enjoy the sport.'
For more information about tennis activities contact Carlos Caldeira on 01579 383292 extension-245 or on 07966370527.

Conference at
the college
CALLINGTON Community College first arranged a large-scale conference on the subject of citizenship around 18 months ago and is now planning the second to take place in July.
Key note speakers will include Professor Bernard Crick, a national authority on the subject, and other notable organisations will include ChildLine and Community Service Volunteers.
The college is expecting delegates from all over the UK and already lined up guests from as far afield as Poland with possible other visitors coming from Scandinavia and the United States.
Conference organiser, Jennie Kramer, from the college said: 'Citizenship is going to be part of our childrens compulsory curriculum from September 2002. Our college has been recognised for a long time as a school which puts children first. Our pioneering work with 'On Route', has shown just how much good can be done by students for their fellow students. It is a listening service provided by Sixth Formers, but students are trained to know what they can do and also when it time to seek advice from others.'
The conference is due to take place on July 6 and further information is available from the college reception on 01579 383292.
