Honour for
Peter Hambly
CALLINGTON Rotary club recently nominated member Peter Hambly of Wescott, Callington, as a new Paul Harris fellow. These awards are only made for outstanding service to Rotary and through Rotary to the local community and beyond.
Giving the detailed citation, founder member, past president and himself a Paul Harris fellow, Rotarian Tom H Pearson traced Peter Hambly's history from birth ion 1934, to education at Truro Cathedral school, through national service to becoming a renowned beef, sheep and arable farmer at Wescott, Callington, and serving as a judge of sheep at the Royal show at Stoneleigh. Married to Diana who with son Peter are partners in the business, Mr Hambly was elected county vice-chairman of the Young Farmers' Clubs in the late fifties and has served Callington town council for over 30 years.
Six times elected Portreeve and aptly voted Portreeve in the millennium year, Peter Hambly could be described as the grandfather of the council. Past chairman of governors of Callington primary school, general commissioner of the Inland Revenue since 1973, churchwarden at St Mary church, Callington and Lay vice chairman of the parish church council are but some of the additional avenues of service Mr Hambly has rendered to the community over the years.
Within Rotary, Peter Hambly has served as past president and secretary of Callington Rotary club at the local level as well as being a serving member of the district foundation committee, so few local Rotarians were better suited to be honoured with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship.
Inquest into
canoeist's death
A VERDICT of accidental death has been recorded on young mother, Michelle Wright, who drowned in a canoeing accident on the River Tavy on November 11 last year.
The verdict was recorded this week by Devon coroner, Richard Van Oppen. Michelle, 34, of Stoke Climsland, was one of a party of five, including her partner Andrew Gray. The inquest heard she had turned to wave to Mr Gray when she hit a tree branch, lost control of her kayak and capsized. She was then pinned under the water. Mr Van Oppen described it as a tragic accident, and sympathised with the family, while Mr Gray said Michelle had been a great mother.
