Solos on Sunday
AT CALLINGTON Brotherhood's Sunday meeting for fellowship, Rev A J Smith, Pastor of the Crusade Fellowship Centre at Gunnislake was the speaker. He also sang a solo.
Michael Perkin sang a solo as well, and both were accompanied by organist Barry Higgins.
A reading from the Bible was given by Basil Bunkum. Russell Deacon was the Chairman.
Happy thoughts
CALLINGTON United Sisterhood's meeting was presided over by Mrs Vida Pearce.
Happy Thoughts were read by Mrs Elsie Hope on 'Best sellers', Mrs Margaret Brough on 'What would you do', Mrs Audrey Horsham on 'The sea of life'. Mrs Vida Pearce read from the Christmas crackers and Mrs Barbara Paynter spoke on cooking.
The speaker was Mr Somerville with a talk on The Life of Heyekiah.
Pianist was Mrs Carrie Duance and cups of tea were served by Mrs Edie Pridham and Mrs Winnie Bunkum.
Visit to
Metherell
A COUNCIL site visit is to be held at Middle Metherell Farm, Metherell on February 12 at 11.15am at which councillors are to debate a plan by Mrs I Birch.
The proposal includes construction of a detached bungalow with garage, and a new vehicular/pedestrian access to the road.
Another fair
at college
FOLLOWING the re-introduction in 2000 of a school fair on the Callington Community College site, the college is once again hosting a Community Fair on Saturday April 4.
The aim of the day is to invite clubs and organisations from the area to join staff, parents and students in displaying the wide range of activities on offer in Callington for people of all ages.
Any club or organisation which would like to take advantage of this opportunity to display their activities should contact Richard Lumley, Community Co-ordinator at the college on 01579 383292.
Success for
football girls
CALLINGTON girls' five-a-side football team and the boys team from Brannel are celebrating after winning a place in the area finals of the Wagon Wheels National Cup, the UK's largest indoor football competition for girls and boys under 12.
The first round was held at Callington for the North East Cornwall area, with Callington, Launceston, Camelford and Poltair competing. After completing and winning that round the Callington girls also won the second round played at Fowey. They are now representing East Cornwall in one of 12 area finals that will take place at Andover on February 10 where they will play against up to 16 teams from the South West region from Cornwall to Dorset and Gloucester.
The final aim of the team is to make it through to the National Finals event in Birmingham on March 24.
Finalists will have an opportunity to win the top prize of a school minibus.
Dale Wood, the coach of the team will be travelling to Andover with the seven girls, Becky Picken, Kylie Dymon, Kylie Booth, Mel Stephens, Gemma Farley and the two substitutes, Charlie Nicholls and Yasmin Pocula, along with other members of staff and parents.
The eight boys teams and 12 girls teams that make it through to the national final will go on a tour of Villa Park and meet a celebrity footballer.
Hockey team
are champion
THE Callington Community College U-19 hockey team showed grit and determination in a series of fine performances to win the title of U-19 Cornwall County Champions at a recent final.
The competition drew teams from as far away as Penzance, but Callington College managed two wins, two draws and only one defeat which was enough to put them in first place in a closely fought battle.
Players worthy of particular mention are Tom Lake, who played the final match with a deep gash in one shin, Tom Francis, a Year 10 student performing alongside students much older than himself, and Rachel Batten, the lone female member
