Fireworks go off

with a bang

An estimated 10,000 people made their way through the gates into the Callington Community College site on Saturday evening to attend the annual Callington fireworks display.

Sponsored by Ginsters, the display is run by a joint committee which works throughout the year to ensure the event can take place without any mishaps.

The event is organised with the full support of Callington Town Council and has been hosted by the Community College for the past three years since building work on Ginster's Tavistock Road site has not allowed the event to take place there.

The display this year was by far the best that has been seen by Callington and the huge crowds were delighted that the weather conditions allowed the show to go on.

The skies cleared to give the visiting crowds a display that they will remember for many a year.

All Saints party

at St Mary's

ST MARY'S Church, Callington was the venue for an All Saints party on Tuesday. The event began with over 40 children enjoying a variety of games.

The winners were Jessica March, Jenny Julian, Bianca Brandon, Richard Dean, Chris Gawman, Sophie Berryman, Beth Julian, Morwenna Boyne, Teifi Yasy, Tom Warner, Adam Emmerson, Becky, Daniel, Katie Gliddon, Chloe Binding, Shelbie Wadge, Toby Beresford-Power, Emma Jiajka and Jack Binding. The children sang 'Who built the Ark' and 'If I were a butterfly'.

The Church Youth leader, Paul Julian, briefly explained that a TV show like Buffy the vampire slayer and Halloween events can lead to witchcraft and evil, so St Mary's has a party to celebrate the Saints who are heroes of the Christian church.

Eight-year-old Beth Julian sang the the song 'Superhuman', by MIC, a South African Christian pop group

On Thursday at the church, Barry Burrows, Joanna Henshaw, Sophie McNally, Jean Walmsley and Katie Williams were confirmed by Bishop Roy, the Bishop of St Germans.

During his sermon, Bishop Roy spoke of All Saint's Day and said that today Saints were ordinary people working to do their best for God. After the service a faith supper was held in the Town Hall where Bishop Roy cut a celebration cake, made and decorated by Pam Dolley.

On Saturday The Youth Group enjoyed the fireworks at Callington Community College and handed out invitations to young people to join them afterwards in the Town Hall to experience the fireworks, singing, video and dancing of DNT, during which Dominic Whitting gave a talk.

On Sunday morning in St Mary's Church at the Family Service, a full church celebrated the baptisms of Kimberly Victoria Barriball and Oban Jacob Jones. Celebrations continued in the evening when members of St Sampson's Church, South Hill, joined with St Mary's for Holy Communion followed by a reception, including a decorated cake, for Penny Raynham to mark her recent Ordination as a Deacon.
