St Mary's Church
Youth Group
For some of their summer holidays ten members and leaders from St. Mary's Youth Group attended the Message 2000 project in Manchester. They were part of the 11,000 young people from all over the country who descended on Manchester to take the gospel to the people in the streets.
After worship and bible teaching in the Manchester Evening News arena every morning the volunteers were bussed around the city to help clear gardens and overgrown alleyways, cut grass, paint murals and, for St. Mary's group, run drop-in cafes.
People who had come into contact with the volunteers during the day were then invited to the evening meetings in the arena, which is the largest indoor arena in Europe, and at the end of the fortnight at least 1700 people had made a commitment to God.
Cara Whitting, Katy Rumbold, Jane Richardson, James March, Richard Parker, Colin Veal, Zoe Attwell, Andrew Beasley, Paul Julian and Ruth Littlewood were St. Mary's representatives in Manchester and said they had found it a very different.
CASA TRINITATA - A special house. Maureen and Jim Elliot and their team of volunteers arrived in Romania at the end of July to put some finishing touches to the House- such as plumbing, heating, drains, electricity and the decorating!
The floors will be laid on the next trip in the middle of September when arrangements will be made for the release of eight children from the orphanage to the family home during the 1st week of November.
Maureen and Jim ask for everyone‚s prayers that things run smoothly for them and that they will not, as it has been suggested, have to Œpay‚ for the children ˆ choosing the 8 has been heartbreaking enough without having to buy them!
St. Mary's Harvest Festival takes place on the 24th September and all the items given for this will go to Safecare Aid to Romania.
New curate
On Thursday 31st August the Rev Bishop Roy, the Suffragan Bishop of St. Germans, licensed the Rev. Professor Barry Jennings to serve as Curate in the Parishes of St. Sampson, South Hill and St. Mary's, Callington.
The service took place in St. Mary's Church and was attended by relatives and friends of Barry and Penny Jennings. Barry duly swore the Oath of Allegiance to the Queen; the Bishop of Truro; and the upholding of the Book of Common Prayer and the 39 Articles of Religion according to the Church of England together with a declaration to faithfully execute his clerical duties to the people of Callington and South Hill.
After receiving his licence from Bishop Roy, Barry thanked the people of Callington and South Hill for making him and his wife, Penny, so welcome. The Rector, Revd. Robert Oakes said that as Barry had received his licence he felt that Penny should also receive a gift and presented her with a basket of flowers. Delicious refreshments after the service rounded off the evening.
