Relaygram with message on Third World debt
A Relaygram urging the cancellation of Third World debt left Liskeard recently by tractor and trailer, driven by Colin Parsons visiting Pensilva church on the way to Callington.
Portreeve Peter Hambly and Christian Aid organiser Jane Richardson sent the relaygram on its next stage to Tavistock, visiting Duchy College and Launceston en route. Leaving the county over Greystone Bridge, it was received by Nick Mills Hicks in Bedford Square, Tavistock.
Transport was provided by John Andrew with his 1957 Austin lorry. The drivers' mates were Adrian Sanders and Philip Medland.
Businesses welcome flood defence scheme success
After years of winter flooding, the businesses of the Florence Road Industrial Estate, Callington, are delighted that the recently completed surface water drainage system has stopped the flooding .
'Around this time every year the businesses on the estate are used to having to stop work to bail out our premises," said Colin Hill, chairman of the newly-formed Florence Road Industrial Estate Association.
"The completion of this scheme has removed this annual headache."
Chairman of Caradon District Council Godfrey Smale said: "This joint public/private sector scheme has used the council's knowledge of grants to help overcome a serious flooding problem for business on the estate.
"Close co-operation has maximised grant aid for what is believed to be the only flood defence scheme in the South West region to receive European grant aid due to its economic impact."
The funding package for the £150,000 scheme was made up by the European Regional Development Fund 50 percent, Caradon District Council 24 percent, South West of England Regional Development Agency 15 percent, and the Florence Road Industrial Estate Association 11percent.
Singing to help
children in need
ALEXANDRA Ward is still urging people across Cornwall to join in with the Lantern Link 2000 project, aiming to unite Cornwall in song to raise money for Children In need.
The song for Cornwall has already gained much acclaim, the actor Edward Woodward describing it as "the most beautiful song I've ever heard".
Communities and organisations throughout Cornwall have already shown support by performing the song, which was short-listed in a recent competition.
Alexandra said: "This is for such a worthy cause and the idea of uniting Cornwall in this musical way is very appealing."
