MP was guest speaker

Callington Rotary club, meeting at The Bulls Head on January 13 welcomed as guest speaker, local MP Colin Breed, currently Liberal Democrat shadow minister for agriculture.

Mr Breed gave a review of how successive governments' economic savings efficiencies leave little capacity for emergencies such as now in the health service where, not only the influenza outbreak can cause problems but also where, in the summer, the influx of visitors creates added strain in the west.

He then outlined his concern for rural life and the tensions that economic change does bring unless well thought through.

Callington Rotary president and Duchy College head, Steve Parsons, thanked Mr Breed.

Rock concert at the college

In just twelve months there has been an addition to the social calendar in Callington. Last Saturday was the third time that Callington Community College has hosted a rock concert featuring two local bands, 'Chalk' and 'The METs'.

Both bands have three things in common: they consist primarily of local players, being fronted by two local head teachers, Steve Kenning from Callington Community College and Dave Bundy from Stoke Climsland Primary School; their aim is to perform to provide extra pennies for school and college funds, and they are both brilliant live bands.

From the very first number to the grand finale which saw all the players from both bands up on stage, the music was electrifying, whether they were playing raw rock and roll, ska, glam-rock or more bluesy numbers the one thing that came over loudly and clearly was that everyone on stage was very talented and they were all enjoying themselves. Strong vocals and skilled musicianship on bass, lead and rhythm guitars, drums, harmonica and saxophone really gave the venue an atmosphere that prompted everyone in the audience to get to their feet and dance the night away.

Guild meeting

The first Callington Guild meeting of the New Year was held at Callington Methodist Church recently. Rev Howard Burnow was the speaker, his subject was strange facts.

This in reference to passages well known in the Bible which are not mentioned in any hymns, he also quoted many hymn references which are not mentioned in the bible. Rev Burnow introduced members to an Easter hymn which he had written some years ago.

Mr B. Higgins played for the hymns and tea and biscuits were served by Mrs Wilkins and Mrs Olver.

Next week the speaker will be Mr Kidman and his subject will be St John Ambulance.

Torch Fellowship

The New Year's meeting of the Callington Torch Fellowship took place at the Mustard Seed Church where Mr J Todd presided.

The speaker was Mr Peter Coombe who made the start of the New Millennium come alive as he recalled how so many different prophecies over hundreds of years were fulfilled. To the delight of the audience he produced a live pet lamb to illustrate the significance of the lamb mentioned in the bible.

Mr Coombe was the organist and the tea hostesses were Mesdames R. Prynn, T. Price, J. Hutchings and J. Todd.

Brotherhood

Callington Brotherhoods society president Kevin Veal presided at the Brotherhood's first meeting of the New Year.

Sharing in the fellowship was guest speaker David Wenmoth, with Brian Nokes and Vernon Dean singing the gospel in song.

A bible reading was given by Basil Bunkum and organist, Barry Higgins led the hymn singing.
