Flooding over?

Seasonal flooding problems at the Florence Road Industrial Estate, Kelly Bray could become a fact of the past when a Caradon council scheme to provide a new water culvert and road surface is completed this autumn.

Grant funding has been committed from the Euro Option 5B budget and the contract has been awarded to the lowest tenderer, Widegates-based Minerva SW Ltd. The work will start in September and take nine weeks.

A day out for all the family

A garden party is to be held in the Chapel Field in Haye Road from 10.30am to 4.00pm on Saturday, August 14.

Organised by the Callington Methodist Church, it will be officially opened by Sarah Foot (Mrs S Burbury). The Callington Town Band will be serenading the visitors, who can enjoy browsing around a variety of stalls run by local organisations, as well as watching craft demonstrations, trying their luck at the sideshows or taking a refreshment break.

Road improvement

Following submission by Councillor Smale on behalf of the town council, a letter has been received from capital programme manager of the county council Mr P Swain indicating that the gradients of the land were being checked. If it was then considered feasible for ramping to be carried out Mr Swain would recommend this to County for early implementation, but the town council would be expected to provide matching funding to allow the improvement to proceed. This is good news for the council which has long campaigned for work to be done on the very dangerous section of pavement leading up to the Community College.

Lord's prayer in Cornish

A Cornish version of the Lord's Prayer has been presented to the town council and is to be placed with the council archives.

Healthy cooking for young kids

Youngsters from the Callington Community College have been quick to take up the offer of cooking lessons during the first week of the summer holiday.

Altogether, 140 children have enrolled for courses. Each day, the young cooks have served up a healthy meal consisting of whole pizza surprise, stuffed eggs, mushroom and rice salad, coleslaw, apple and carrot salad and wholemeal bread rolls, with orange-filled baked apples for pudding. In addition, they made spiced fruit scones, muesli flapjacks, honey cookies and date and hazelnut muffins.

Children attending the sessions came from all but one of the feeder schools. Among the sponsors of the event is Andrew Beddoes of the Fruit Shop in Liskeard, who provided all the fruit and vegetables for use by the children.

National Trust talk

Callington Rotary Club president Steve Parsons introduced the guest speaker Lewis Eynon to meeting meeting at the Bull's Head .

Mr Eynon, a philosophy graduate and chartered accountant, left the administration structure in the National Trust to become property manager at Cotehele some five years ago.

The speaker detailed many ancillary objectives of the Trust, additional to its prime role as the preserver of historic buildings and areas of beauty for the public access.

The Trust's concern in furthering its integration in the local community means the premises in its care are available venues for local organisations and conference rooms are available for hire. The Trust, Mr Eynon explained, furthers educational projects locally and gives valuable opportunities for local employment and charitable service.

The speaker was the guest of past president Graham Hindle, who proposed the vote of thanks .
