CORNWALL COUNTY PREMIER DIVISION

Callington v Newquay

CALLINGTON had hoped to open their winning account at the expense of visiting Newquay, but it was not to be as the Seasiders strolled to an eight-wicket victory.

Jim Shorten wanted to win the toss but didn't, and no-one was surprised when Joe Crane invited Callington to bat first.

Jon Parsons fell leg before in the ninth over and his fellow opener Andy Shorten and county man Dan Davis batted sensibly to add 79 before Shorten was caught by Rob Harrison, off ex-Callington spinner Godfrey Furse, after scoring 27.

Luke Davis joined his brother at the wicket and with father Derek prowling the boundary, they added another 42,when Dan was caught in the deep by another Dan, Brooks, off the bowling of another Dan, Stephens.

Davis had scored a fine 77 from 94 balls including 10 fours and a six. Luke went on to make 35, but after that nobody, disappointingly, could reach double figures.

Furse was the main wicket taker, with 4-48 from his favourite Town End, and Harrison weighed in with 3-21 and also snapped up a couple of catches.

Callington ended their 50-over inninsg on 166-9, which was a competitive target, but far from daunting.

Newquay opened up with new signing Martin Pearce and Aussie Jimmy Newnham, and they set about the target from the first over.

Newnham was needlessly run out in the 10th over after scoring 20, but that only brought Rob Harrison to the crease.

He and his County colleague Pearce survived a couple of chances to put the game beyond Callington with a second wicket stand of 81.

Harrison made 39 before being bowled by Aidan Libby in the 28th over with the total on 119. Crane joined Pearce, who had just passed his half century, and they steered Newquay to victory in the 38th over with no more casualties, despite Shorten juggling his bowlers.

Pearce finished unbeaten on 92 which was a fine effort that included 13 fours and three sixes in 119 balls.
