A SALTASH resident and former Royal Navy officer has called for a new war memorial in the town.

Barry Brooking says that lengthy research done by a local historian, Peter Clements, has brought to light 74 First and Second World War fallen who have a connection to Saltash, but whose names are missing from existing memorials.

Mr Brooking gave an impassioned talk on the matter during public questions at a recent meeting of Saltash Town Council.

He said that a booklet had been produced listing the names, and that in 2019, the Council had agreed in principle to the provision of a memorial, and that he would now like to see this project revisited.

“I do feel a community and a council must have a heart in remembering those who have sacrificed their lives,” said Mr Brooking.

“I don’t want the Council’s money – we can crowdfund – but I do need a site. I can’t understand why they won’t support what we are trying to do.”

Mr Brooking hopes that a working party might be formed on the council to address this, and to review other aspects of the way in which Remembrance is marked in Saltash.
