TAXI companies in Liskeard have won their fight for more parking space in the town after Caradon District Council put £10,000 towards improving an existing bay. The town currently has two taxi ranks, one in Bay Tree Hill and one near the pelican crossing on The Parade. A row broke out last week after taxi companies complained that their calls to lengthen the rank on The Parade were being ignored. However, Caradon District Council has now agreed to the improvements, and Grayson Mitchell, owner of Express Taxis, was delighted with the news. 'The taxi drivers are very grateful to Caradon as it is really a Cornwall County Council issue,' he said. However, despite getting the current bay improved, Mr Mitchell believes more could be done for the taxi companies operating in Liskeard. 'We have around 30 taxis using Liskeard, but we only have two taxi ranks and this really needs looking at,' he said. 'Looe, a small harbour town, has space for six taxis but on The Parade we only have room for three. 'In the past eight years the number of taxis using the town has doubled in size – Liskeard is a market town which is growing at a frightening pace. 'Thankfully we are moving forward but more needs to be done.'
