UNEMPLOYMENT in the Liskeard area is continuing to fall.
Figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show that 3,000 more people are in employment in the South West than this time last year. In Liskeard, there were 207 people registered as unemployed in December compared to 287 at the same time the year before.
‘We have a downward trend in unemployment across the board,’ said Liskeard Jobcentre work coach Steve Coley. Whereas in the past, there would be fluctuations through the year as people came off short-term contracts, there is now an ongoing fall in unemployment.
‘This suggests to me that the work is more stable and fixed,’ said Steve.
A range of initiatives are available at the Liskeard office, particularly aimed at 18-24-year-olds.
Projects such as the work academy in care or hospitality provide work experience, build confidence and employability, and lead to qualifications in first aid and health and safety.
