THE Government’s unprecedented ’Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme will bring a huge boost to Conwall’s tourism industry this summer, says a Cornish MP.

Under plans unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak today, people will be able to use vouchers to claim 50% off meals in pubs and restaurants, with businesses then able to claim the money back.

’Encouraging people back into restaurants, cafes and pubs, with businesses being able to quickly claim the difference back from the Government, is particularly welcome in Cornwall,’ said MP Steve Double.

’Also particularly welcome for Cornwall is the temporary cutting of VAT to 5% for the tourism and hospitality sectors, giving a much-needed boost to some of the industries hardest hit by coronavirus.’

A further measure included in the Chancellor’s new £30 billion Plan for Jobs is a scheme aimed at helping businesses to support their employees after the furloughing period ends.

It will see employers paid a one-off payment of £1000 for each member of previously-furloughed staff who is kept on in the business until at least January.

Meanwhile the threshold on stamp duty for those buying a house has been raised to £500,000.
