SEVERE damage has been caused to changing rooms at a football club after the cold weather caused a water pipe to burst.
The damage, at Dobwalls FC, is thought to amount to around £2,000 and was discovered on Thursday morning when water was seen rushing out under the door of the changing rooms and into the car park.
John Dunn, assistant secretary at the club, said: 'I've been down to the site to look at the damage and it is pretty bad.
'The main worry is that all of the electrics have been flooded and so, as a result, we had to cancel last weekend's second team home game against Boscastle FC.
'We've managed to put a fitting on the pipe to prevent any more water coming out.
'In the four to five years that this building has been here we have never had a problem like this.'
The club is currently seeking quotes on the damage and will be passing the details onto its insurance company. The first team played away last weekend against Godolphin Atlantic, from Newquay, and was due to play them at home this weekend, however this game has also been cancelled.
Meanwhile, a similar incident also occurred at Menheniot Cricket Club when three water pipes in the loft of the building burst and caused damage the clubs pavilion.
Keith Goldsmith, chairman of the cricket club, said: 'This has caused a major problem for us. I think it may have happened on Thursday afternoon as the pipes started to thaw.'
A spokesman from the
Met Office confirmed that temperatures overnight on Wednesday could have gone as low as
-6°C and said that the warmer weather on Thursday would
have resulted in the metal pipes expanding, causing them to crack.
