LISKEARD'S Bubble retail park, the site of Homebase, Argos and Pets at Home, has been sold for £9m. The site has been bought from property developer Tony Lawson by LondonMetric in a joint venture with Universities Superannuation Scheme. Mr Lawson, 67, has been responsible for several developments in Liskeard in the last two decades. He took on a swathe of land at Charter Way after the previous developer went bust and set about getting things moving with the planners at Caradon Council. He was involved in the development of Morrisons and the nearby housing estates in the 1990s. Linked with this huge development, he funded a new dental practice. Mr Lawson, who is based in Hazelmere, Surrey, also developed commercial land at Charter Way and planted 17,000 trees. 'The only piece of land I retained was the Bubble itself,' he said. 'With all my developments in Liskeard, I have always used local architects and engineers, and down through the years it pleases me to think that the units on the Bubble and at Morrisons have provided hundreds of employment opportunities, especially for young people. 'After such a long time it will feel strange not to be involved with Liskeard anymore. As a developer you get used to some good and some bad relationships, but someone said to me the other day that I might be difficult to get along with, but I did what I said I would do, and for a property developer that's praise indeed!' The sale of the Bubble will not have any effect on the retail units, and Homebase, which has been undergoing rebuilding works, overseen by Mr Lawson, since the major fire which closed it down last year, is on course to reopen in November.
