Bryan Preston, who has been deputy mayor of Saltash for the past two years, is to be the town's mayor for 2000/01.
Mr Preston was elected at the end of Saltash town council's meeting last Thursday, with Eve Storey chosen as his deputy.
Mr Preston, 53, was born in Staffordshire and is married with four children. His daughter, Jennifer, will be the mayoress. He moved to Saltash in l977 and has been on the town council as a Liberal Democrat representative for five years. He is a chairman of Saltash Livewire youth centre, a governor at Saltash community school and a member of Saltash twinning association. He did not become mayor last year due to ill health.
Mrs Storey, 58, is married with a son and a daughter. She was born in Liskeard and has been on Saltash town council since l995 and Caradon district council since l994. She is the town council's representative on the Age Concern committee, and also supports Shop Mobility.
The mayor-choosing ceremony will be on May 9.
