PREMIER DIVISION

Callington v Truro

THIS was a much-improved performance from Callington and after losing the toss they found themselves in the field, on a warm and sunny afternoon.

Jon, Kent and Chris Martin did not find runs easy to come by and seamers Jim Shorten and Dan Davis kept the score under three an over, despite the odd wide and no ball.

The first wicket fell in the 19th over when Martin edged one to Joe White off Davis.

Seven overs later Kent was trapped leg before by spinner James Boundy. Chris Hunkin did not trouble the scorers, but then County captain Tom Sharp and James Walton put together a large partnership of 107 for the fourth wicket with Sharp making 55 from 83 deliveries.

He was finally bowled by Luke Davis and Walton went on to make a hard hit 67 from 62 balls including nine fours and a six.

In the end Callington's target was 223 to win, with Luke Davis finishing with three for 39 and Shorten two for 42.

Callington's innings was almost a carbon copy of Truro's with Jamie Hatch and Jon Parson's making a slow but steady start, and then the Davis brothers putting together a partnership of 115 for the third wicket.

Dan was the senior partner and his 50 came up in just 38 balls, against the pace attack of Fairman, Taylor and Hunkin.

After the Davis' had seen off the more leisurely Chris Phillips, Sharp brought himself on from the Town End, but he was in his ninth over before he took a low return catch to dismiss Luke for a valuable 41.

As often happens, Dan went soon after, lbw to Sharp in the skipper's last over with the Callington all rounder just 12 runs short of his century and for the first time in the innings the game tilted towards Truro.

Shorten hit a quick dozen, but with the overs running out, wickets began to fall as the shots got rasher, and two run outs in the last over sealed Callington's fate... although Bennett defended the last two balls to deny the visitors maximum points.
