Lanreath lost 1-2 against Launceston in the Rowett Insurance League Cup Final.
Lanreath's brave effort to win their first Senior trophy in only their third season as a Senior club fell at the final hurdle at the hands of a resolute Launceston side in front of a gate of more than 250 fans.
By and large Launceston, whose defence was terrific, deserved the victory... yet an outrageous error by the match officials not to allow a Johnny Collins goal which had clearly crossed the line by two or three feet cost Lanreath dear.
Lanreath started well, and a terrific shot by Bradley Powell was saved at full-stretch by goalkeeper Matt Harris.
Launceston, with Alan Yendall in dangerous form up front, forced stopper Jamie Castle to be at his very best, before the mistake which would have given Lanreath the lead.
They eventually broke the deadlock when captain Powell picked up a loose ball before driving it past Harris.
Unfortunately, the Lanreath defence switched off two minutes later when Dan Rogers found Launceston captain Mark Goodman in acres of space to slam the ball into the net, and the killer goal arrived in the second period, when prolific goalscorer Paul Banks fired in a free-kick.
Lanreath's goal then led a charmed life as another effort bounced off their crossbar, followed by Banks sending another free-kick onto the bar.
Try as they did, Lanreath
were unable to break down the Launceston defence; indeed, their opponents could have gone further behind but for the agility of Castle, who pulled off a number of good saves.
Lanreath player-manager Andy Collins admitted: 'We are obviously disappointed at not coming away with the Cup, but we have had a great day.
'We tried our best, but all credit to Launceston they were deserved winners.'
