Late withdrawals forced Polperro to field three regular second team players in this Knock Out Cup second round tie with Premier opposition Saltash but they slotted in perfectly and the whole side played with great determination and purpose.

Polperro had the upper hand for all the first half and went ahead after 20 minutes when Jason Richardson broke down the right wing and hit a cross destined for Mark Pengelly at the far post which was deflected into the net by a defender's desperate lunge.

Saltash opened the second period well and pressured the visitors for 25 minutes before snatching an equaliser which brought Polperro back to life and the game swung back in their favour. Polperro's finishing in front of goal let them down slightly but eventually Richardson got the better of the on- form Saltash 'keeper to restore their lead.

With ten minutes remaining a careless handling incident in the Polperro penalty box threw Saltash a replay lifeline which they were very relieved to take. This was definitely a man's game but sensible refereeing by Trevor Down, who rarely has to resort to card waving to keep control, kept the play flowing and all concerned enjoyed the contest.
