After drawing 2-2 at Saltash, this replay was always going to be tough and close. A very soft pitch was also going to play a big part, and making real flowing football difficult.
Saltash started the better and put a very young Polperro side under pressure. However, Polperro's defence held firm, and with a counter attack, Aarron Spry put Polperro in front . Both sides continued to battle away to get the initiative and Saltash levelled the score from a corner.
Again, Polperro surged forward, and free scoring Matt Barton looped the ball over the keeper from 25 yards to put Polperro back in the driving seat.
The second started as the first with Saltash going forward and causing problems. This pressure lead to two quick goals putting them 3-2 up for the first time in the game. At this point it looked as though Saltash would go on to win the game, but you can never write off Polperro, and from a corner, after a goalmouth scramble, Richard 'Chippie' Chapman got the ball over the goal line to put Polperro level again at 3-3.
With time running out and Polperro now going for a winner, Matt Barton was again on target but with time fast running out Saltash equalised to put the game into extra time. The first half of extra time was even although both teams had the opportunity to go ahead again. The last period of extra time continued to draw a stalemate until two minutes from the end 'Juggernaught' Jason Richardson, who had battled all day, got his rich deserve with a deflected goal to put Polperro into, what all the crowd thought was the winner. However, Saltash had other ideas. Straight from the kick-off, and without a Polperro player touching the ball, they equalised. With only seconds to go from the restart, referee Mike Fidler blew for time, which meant both teams went into a penalty shoot-out. With the light fading fast, and 16 penalties having been taken, the hero of the hour Polperro keeper Paul Hudson saved the 17th to put Polperro through to the third round. This was a game that will not be forgotten for a long time. Congratulations to all the players of both sides for putting on a spectacle and to a young Polperro side who have a big future.
